Yes — cultured stone bonds directly to brick with the right prep. The trick: clean the brick, score the surface, apply a scratch coat with Type-S mortar, then set stone as you would on any masonry substrate. Total project time on a fireplace surround is typically 1–2 days.

Existing brick is one of the easiest substrates for cultured stone — it's already structural, dimensionally stable, and the rough texture gives mortar something to grip. You don't need to demo the brick or add metal lath like you would over wood framing. The key steps:

1. Clean the brick. Wire-brush off any soot, paint, or efflorescence. The mortar needs to bond to clean masonry, not contamination.

2. Score painted brick. If your brick has been painted (very common on 1980s-2000s fireplaces), the paint will prevent mortar adhesion. Use a wire wheel on an angle grinder to score the painted surface to bare brick. Tedious but necessary.

3. Apply a scratch coat. Trowel a 3/8" layer of Type-S mortar across the brick face. Score it horizontally with a notched trowel while wet. Let cure 24 hours.

4. Set stone as normal. Corners first, butter the back of each stone, work top-down, mix shapes from multiple boxes.

For a typical 50-sqft fireplace surround, expect 1 day for cleaning + scratch coat, 1 day for stone set + grouting. Most homeowners can do this themselves with basic masonry tools.

Skip the painted-brick scoring

If your brick is unpainted and clean, you can skip step 1's scoring entirely. Just rinse with a hose, let dry, scratch coat, and go. Saves you 4–6 hours.
